Just type 2012 in google and see the results. One thing very obvious is that there is a scare that the world is going to end, most of it, if not ALL in 2012 (or around that date, give or take 2 years!!!). What is all the more scary is that the similar prediction comes from different quarters!!
2012: NASA predicts very high intensity solar storms
Solar minimum has arrived, means there is currently no activity on the surface of sun. The sun spots have all but disappeared. Sun spots are result of explosions on surface of Sun, called solar storms. They have 12 yr life time and they vanish after the activity settles down. We are at that point now, waiting for a solar storm to start next cycle!! But what’s the cause for alarm is the intensity of the solar storm!

The effects?
Practical and scientific: This would cast a strong magnetic field on earth. It would/could disrupt the satellite, GPS systems and may even cause Blackouts!

Now comes the interesting part. There is something called “Mayan Culture”, who are linked to Egyptians and who worship the sun. The Mayan Calendar ends on December 21st 2012!!!!
A researchers report “When Maurice came to study the Mayan calendar he noticed that there was a great similarity between the time cycles predicted for solar magnetism and the cycles inherent to the Mayan calendar system. In his theory the Sun's magnetic field reverses at the end of a complete cycle, after 1,366,040 days. In the Mayan calendar, a complete cycle of time is 1,366,560 days.”
Stars like the Sun can suddenly become much brighter
The magazine New Scientist, 9 Jan 99, carried an article covering a meeting of the American Astronomical Society. A team of astronomers studying Sun-like stars discovered that most of them seem to produce a superflare about once a century.
They studied observational records and found that stars similar to the Sun occasionally become as much as ten times brighter, for periods of hours or days. The astronomers are reported to be baffled as to why the Sun is so stable. Perhaps it does flare, but only every five thousand years, when the magnetic field reverses; causing so much destruction that no eye witness accounts have survived.
Interestingly, every eleven years, at the peak of the sunspot cycle, Coronal Mass Ejections occur. During these events material from the Sun is ejected into space. The last one caused a lengthy power blackout in Quebec, Canada, beginning 31st March 1989, after magnetic disturbances caused severe voltage fluctuations.
The next such event is predicted for the year 2012. (See cover-story 'Bolts of Fire,' New Scientist magazine 27th Feb 99). Normally these events provide spectacular displays of the Northern Lights (aurora borealis), but are not bright compared to the Sun.
Interestingly, even some interpreters of the Bible have arrived at a similar conclusion!

No, its not all doomsday predictions and nay-sayer’s day, there have been some good Samaritans too..!
Some of the renowned Gurus have interpreted that “The end of the world” doesn’t mean total annihilation of the physical world. It only means the end of the world as we know it currently! They firmly hold the view that the Satya yuga or the Golden Age is about to commence after 2012! There would be so much change in the spiritual progress and intellect/intuition of man, that the two worlds (the world now, and the world then) would be incomparable! The catch is that the transformation would be smooth if man willing tunes himself to the Nature. Else there would be destruction and suffering proportional to the man’s thick-headedness!!
So “To be or not to be” is a matter of collective choice of human race!
